Tracking the fungus in the field: what Taiwanese genomics reveals about Beauveria bassiana | SIP-IOBC 2026In this final episode of the series recorded at SIP-IOBC 2026, I spoke with Kusum Mushyakhwo, PhD student at National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. She presented a genomics study of indigenous Beauveria bassiana isolates and a study on the molecular interaction between the fungus and the melon thrips, Thrips palmi. In the genomics work, Kusum sequenced native isolates and found two of them sharing 99.98% genetic identity. Still, she identified unique genomic regions and developed 12 primer pairs able to recognize these isolates, including one pair that can tell the two “twins” apart. In practice, this is a tool to track a specific isolate in the environment and monitor what was applied in the field. In the thrips study, RNA sequencing showed how the insect switches on defense genes and lipid metabolism while the fungus reprograms its own metabolism to infect. This is the last episode of the series recorded with researchers from SIP-IOBC 2026. If you work with bioinputs, it’s worth listening to all of them.🎙️ Bioagrotech: bioinput science, straight from the source.
